Find the Right Path

Is Surgical Weight Loss Right for You?

Surgical Weight Loss may be the right choice if you:

Have weight loss goals of 50 pounds or more

Have a BMI greater than 30

Want to avoid long-term medications for weight management

Struggle with weight-related health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea

Weight loss surgery works by reducing portion sizes, reducing appetite, and improving metabolic efficiency—helping you lose more weight and keep it off long-term.

Weight loss surgery produces more significant, and long-lasting weight loss.

Most patients who undergo a weight loss procedure can expect to lose 25-40% of their starting total body weight, instead of the 5-20% seen with weight loss medications.

Nearly 80% of patients who have gastric bypass surgery maintain at least 70% or more of their weight loss long-term.

Weight loss surgeries are more effective than medications in treating weight-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

More cost-effective options for patients hoping to avoid pricey weight loss medications, and for those facing significant financial burden of long-term health conditions.

why consider surgery?

Weight loss surgery will prolong a person’s life by 5-14 years on average, due to dramatic improvement in their overall health and lifestyle.

Some patients may benefit more from a certain procedure based on their other health conditions and current lifestyle.

What is it?

Sleeve gastrectomy involves removal of 80% of the stomach, reshaping the stomach from a football-sized balloon into a short segment of garden hose.

What Does It do?

How long does it take?

Expected results.

Sleeve gastrectomy decreases appetite and subsequent portion sizes, so a person feels less hungry and more satisfied by less food after surgery.

Takes around 35 minutes to perform.

Patients who undergo sleeve gastrectomy can expect to lose around 70% of their excess weight by 9-12 months after surgery.

Patients typically are home within 24 hrs of surgery.

*The most popular procedure for weight loss in the United States today.

What is it?

Involves the creation of a new stomach “pouch” at the top of the stomach around the size of half an egg, that is then directly connected by the surgeon to the small intestine.

What Does It do?

How long does it take?

Expected results.

This allows ingested food to “bypass” the majority of the stomach and first portion of the small intestine.

Takes 1-2 hours to perform.

Patients who undergo gastric bypass can expect to lose around 80% of their excess weight by 9-12 months, and will have more improvement in acid reflux and type 2 diabetes than with sleeve gastrectomy.

Patients typically are home within 24 hrs of surgery.

*A classic weight loss procedure with a great long-term performance profile.

Gastric bypass is an excellent choice for patients who struggle with severe acid reflux.

What is it?

Duodenal Switch combines a sleeve gastrectomy with a more distal intestinal bypass, leading to extremely durable weight loss and sustained control over metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

What Does It do?

How long does it take?

Expected results.

Duodenal switch can be performed after or in combination with sleeve gastrectomy. The switch is  best suited for patients with initial weight loss goals greater than 150 pounds, or for patients who seek additional weight loss after sleeve gastrectomy.

Takes 1-2 hours to perform.

Patients who undergo Duodenal switch as their primary procedure can expect to lose 80-90% of their excess weight by 2 years after surgery. For patients who undergo a Duodenal switch following a sleeve gastrectomy, additional weight loss is typically 30-45 pounds.

Patients typically are home within 1-2 days of surgery.

*Achieve Weight Loss is the ONLY program in southeast Idaho to offer this specialized procedure.

Some patients may benefit more from a certain procedure based on their current health conditions and lifestyle.

Safety & Recovery

If you would consider having gallbladder removal or a knee replacement, you should feel comfortable considering a weight loss procedure. For patients with type 2 diabetes, weight loss surgery is in fact MORE SAFE than minimally-invasive gallbladder removal.

Our enhanced surgical recovery pathway allows patients to get back on their feet quickly—

Modern weight loss surgery is extremely safe

Within a few hours of surgery patients are walking around and sipping liquids.

No heavy pain medications are needed.

Most patients are able to return to work within a week.

Surgeries are performed robotically with minimal pain and downtime.

Small incisions generally less than 1 cm in size.

Advanced Surgery

The Da Vinci surgical robot is an advanced surgical tool that allows improved visualization, control, and surgical dexterity compared to traditional laparoscopy.

The robot exclusively operates at the direction of a surgeon, who sits at a specialized consol to the side of the patient. The surgeon controls every aspect of the robot’s movements, the robot does not operate independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

surgical weight loss treatments

Answers to common questions about surgical weight loss.

what BMI do I need to qualify?

01
There are several BMI ranges that can qualify a person for weight loss surgery:

  • BMI 30-35 with weight-related health conditions and inability to lose weight through alternative methods
  • BMI 35-40 with weight-related health conditions
  • BMI 40 or higher

do I have to try dieting first?

02
Weight loss through dieting is not usually required before weight loss surgery, but a person will still have to make changes in their food choices and lifestyle beforehand to be considered. Good nutrition is an important part of the foundation for lasting success with weight loss surgery.

how do I know if I’m ready for weight loss surgery?

03

There’s no perfect time to pursue weight loss surgery. If a person feels ready to work on weight loss and meets the criteria for weight loss surgery, a consultation with a specialist is the first step towards understanding different options. A consultation is not a commitment to surgery, but it will help clarify the best path moving forward, and other steps that may need to happen first.

what medical conditions qualify me for surgery?

04
Medical conditions that may support coverage for weight loss surgery include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, prior heart attack, congestive heart failure, MAFLD (fatty liver-related hepatitis), benign intracranial hypertension, osteoarthritis (joint arthritis), stress urinary incontinence, or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

what’s the difference between gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and duodenal switch?

05
Gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and duodenal switch are all minimally invasive weight loss surgeries. Each of these surgeries will assist with weight loss, however they are all constructed differently.

Gastric sleeve involves the removal of around 80% of the stomach, leaving a small tubular stomach in place. This reduces appetite and controls portions.

Duodenal switch is a modification to the gastric sleeve that can help with additional weight loss and control over metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. In a duodenal switch, the small bowel is divided just past the stomach and reconnected to a portion of bowel that’s more downstream, bypassing a significant portion of the small intestine and limited food absorption.

Gastric bypass involves the creation of a small stomach pouch, which is separated from the rest of the stomach reconnected to the small intestine. This creates a bypass of the majority of the stomach and first portion of the small bowel, reducing appetite and controlling portions. The remaining stomach stays in place, however does not participate in the digestion of food.

which surgery leads to the most weight loss?

06
All weight loss surgeries produce significant weight loss. Duodenal switch is the most powerful weight loss surgery, however it’s a very aggressive operation and may not be recommended for everyone.

which surgery is safest?

07
While all weight loss surgeries are very safe, the gastric sleeve is the most common bariatric surgery performed in the United States. The gastric sleeve is generally considered the safest due to simplicity and reduced long-term risk of nutritional concerns.

can I choose my procedure?

08
Almost always. Unless a true contraindication to a certain surgery is present, a patient can select the weight loss surgery he or she is most comfortable with.

how much weight will I lose after surgery?

09
Most people who have weight loss surgery will lose between 25 and 40% of their total body weight in one year.

will surgery help with diabetes, sleep apnea, or blood pressure?

10
Weight loss surgery will help to improve or resolve most weight-related problems. Certain problems such as high blood pressure or diabetes will often resolve within 24 hours of surgery, based on metabolic changes within the body caused by the surgery. Other problems such as joint pain or sleep apnea may take a longer time to improve, as significant weight loss must occur first.

what can I eat after bariatric surgery?

11
It takes the stomach 6 weeks to fully recover after surgery, and during this time a person’s diet will be prescribed by their surgeon to ensure good healing. Once the stomach has fully healed, most people can eat most foods in smaller quantities, with an emphasis placed on proteins. Certain foods such as sodas, breads, pastas, sweets, and fried foods are discouraged, and may also not digest well.

can I gain weight back after surgery?

12
Yes. Weight loss surgery is a powerful tool, but it’s not magic. While 90% of patients maintain at least 50% of their weight loss long-term, most patients will deal with some form of weight regain at some point. If nutritional and lifestyle habits are sound, weight regain can usually be addressed with nutritional and lifestyle intervention, weight loss medications, or additional weight loss surgery.

what happens at the first consultation?

13
At their first consultation, a new patient meets with a healthcare provider to review goals, history, and set a plan moving forward. This is often a good opportunity to review the necessary lifestyle changes required for weight loss surgery, discuss preoperative work-up, and set a tentative plan for which weight loss surgery will be the best fit for the patient.

how long is the process from consult to surgery?

14
Most patients are able to have weight loss surgery between 2 and 7 months after their first consultation. This will depend on insurance requirements and the preparedness of the patient.
